Everything you need to know about your MDU steering wheel

Which Toyotas it fits, what's in the box, how buttons and cruise control work, step-by-step fitting, and what to do if something isn't right. Not sure about your car? Send us a photo and we'll check it for you before you order.

Will it fit my Toyota?

Our LC300-style wheels bolt onto the factory steering spline and come with a new airbag. Your factory airbag detonator moves across. Whether the buttons work depends on your model and whether it came with steering wheel controls. We check every order against your photos and rego before it ships.

What's included

In the box

  • Your MDU steering wheel in the leather, carbon or forged carbon you chose
  • A new airbag and horn pad to suit your Toyota (without a detonator)
  • Steering wheel buttons (volume, phone, cruise and dash menu, depending on model)
  • Clockspring, if you ordered one (cars without factory buttons)
  • 10-to-12-pin adapter for older models with a 10-pin plug

What carries across from your car

  • Your factory airbag detonator, moved from your old airbag into the new one (four 8mm nuts)
  • Your factory clockspring, if your car already has buttons
  • Your factory wheel nut

Tools

  • 19mm socket and breaker bar, 8mm socket, small flat screwdriver (2015+ models) or Torx bit (pre-2015 and 70 Series), and about an hour.

Buttons, clockspring and cruise control

My car already has steering wheel buttons

Easy. Your factory clockspring stays, the plugs connect straight into the new wheel, and your buttons work as before with your existing stereo.

My car has no buttons

The clockspring (the coiled ribbon cable behind the wheel) in a no-button car doesn't carry the button circuits. Add our clockspring (+$60) when you order and the new wheel's buttons get a path to the dash. To make them work you also need a steering wheel control harness (not included) running from the clockspring to a stereo with a steering wheel control input. Ask us about the right harness for your car. Most Android head units have this, including ours. A factory Toyota stereo in a no-button car won't read them.

Cruise control

If your Toyota has factory cruise, the small two-wire cruise plug connects to the wheel and cruise runs from the wheel buttons. No cruise in your car? Buttons alone don't add it, but our cruise control kit does, and with a new wheel it runs from the wheel's buttons.

Installation steps

Airbag safety. The steering wheel holds the driver's airbag. If you're not confident, have an auto electrician fit it. It's about an hour's work for them. Never probe airbag plugs with a multimeter, always rest an airbag face up, and never point it at anyone.

Cars that already have steering wheel buttons
  1. Set up. Park level with the front wheels dead straight and the wheel centred. Ignition off. Disconnect the negative (–) battery terminal and wait at least 10 minutes.
  2. Remove the airbag. 2015+ models: release the 3 spring clips through the holes on the back/sides of the wheel with a flat screwdriver. Pre-2015 and 70 Series: undo the Torx screws behind the wheel. Ease the airbag forward and unplug the small black earth wire and the yellow airbag plug (lift the yellow tab first). Rest it face up.
  3. Remove the wheel. Unplug the button plugs. Mark the shaft and wheel so you can line it up again. Loosen the 19mm nut a few turns but leave it on, rock the wheel off the spline, then remove the nut and wheel.
  4. Don't turn the clockspring while the wheel is off. Tape it in place if needed.
  5. Fit the MDU wheel. Feed the plugs through, slide it on lined up with your marks, then refit and tighten the 19mm nut to the workshop-manual torque.
  6. Connect. Button plugs, plus the small two-wire cruise plug if fitted. On older 10-pin cars, use the 10-to-12-pin adapter. Every plug should click.
  7. Move the detonator from your old airbag into the new MDU airbag (four 8mm nuts), plug in the yellow airbag plug (push the tab down to lock), clip on the earth wire, and push the airbag in until it clicks.
  8. Test. Reconnect the battery with nobody in the driver's seat. The airbag light should come on for about 6 seconds then go out. Check horn, buttons and cruise, turn full lock both ways, and take a short test drive.
Cars with no buttons (clockspring upgrade)
  1. Follow steps 1–3 above to disconnect the battery and remove the airbag and wheel.
  2. Remove the old clockspring. Take off the plastic shroud around the column (two Phillips screws underneath). Unplug the two plugs at the bottom of the clockspring near the ignition, release the clips on the top and sides, and remove it.
  3. Fit the new clockspring. Click it into place centred, plug in the yellow airbag plug, and connect a steering wheel control harness (sold separately) between the clockspring and the factory loom.
  4. Run the harness to the stereo. Remove the stereo, route the harness up to it, and connect the button-light wire to a lighting circuit (usually the stereo harness illumination wire) so the buttons dim with your headlights. Then connect the steering control plug (see stereo wiring). Refit the stereo and the column shroud.
  5. Pull out the clockspring's orange locking tab, then fit the wheel, airbag and test as in steps 5–8 above.
  6. In your stereo's steering wheel control settings, set up (learn) each button.

Buttons deadPlugs not connected, or a no-button car without the clockspring and harnessCheck the plugs click in. No-button cars need the clockspring and a stereo with steering wheel control input. Set up the buttons in the stereo settings.
Cruise buttons do nothingCar has no factory cruise, or the 2-wire cruise plug isn't connectedConnect the cruise plug. No factory cruise? See our cruise kit.
Wheel off-centreWheel went on one spline outRemove airbag and nut, move the wheel one spline, refit. Don't turn the clockspring.
